COGREENEU: European Cooperation Against Climate Change

COGREENEU aimed to involve citizens and communities in debates and actions related to climate and environmental issues by creating spaces for transnational activities, workshops, and events where ideas and decisions on environmental sustainability could be put into practice. The results of the project were based on the SDGs framed in the 2030 Agenda. Intergenerational citizen participation was the key factor in including as many citizens as possible in the project, thus providing a plural, multicultural, and diverse voice to address the major challenges that emerged from the climate situation at the time. Only through the manifestation of citizens’ will could local decisions be steered toward a greener, more sustainable, and resource-efficient future.

The youth sector played a fundamental role in the entire process of building the project. COGREENEU aimed to give a voice to and encourage debate among young people, who had been especially affected by the COVID-19 crisis and were seeking their own spaces for participation in society.

Results

New local policies were developed with citizens and young people acting as the main decision-makers of the project.
Awareness was raised among the youth population regarding the European Green Deal and its role in the EU’s ecological transition.
Civic responsibility among intergenerational citizens increased, along with their participation in matters related to the sustainable development of their cities.
The project encouraged the exchange of experiences and joint learning among participants from different European cities, leading to the formulation of local strategies and actions aligned with the European Green Deal and the ecological transition.
European policies on the environment and climate change were disseminated and published at the local level, with a particular emphasis on young Europeans.
